Najem Suhail (Starspangledbanner) headed to the Dr Sheahan Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Saturday as a lead into the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) and came through the test with flying colours.

He was soon in the lead and galloped on purposefully around the bend and into the short straight, winning strongly for jockey Thomas Stockdale. He clocked 69,39s.

Najem Suhail came to Australia after two runs in South Africa with high hopes, especially after trialling impressively before his debut at Mornington last September. He is now a four-time winner in Australia, and he looks to be coming into his own at six, and after being gelded.

Mathew de Kock, speaking for the Griffiths/De Kock training partnership, said Najem Suhail was now better behaved. “It looks like he’s a better horse as a gelding and everyone can see he is a fast horse,” he stated.

Mike de Kock, speaking from the sales grounds at Gosforth Park in South Africa, has now seen his silks win at Flemington and Mooney Valley. “I am really pleased about winning a race at Melbourne’s two famous tracks. Well done to al the partners, Najem Suhail has done us so proud. Let’s hold thumbs now into the G2 sprint.”

Najem Suhail races in partnership for Mike and a sizeable group of young Dubai-based owners assembled by Mohammad Mardood for the Blue Stables Syndicate.
