We’ll never forget you, Kel!

THE TBA Sales Complex at its 2020 renewal today is empty, not the same without Kelvin Haarhoff, our wonderful friend who passed away on Thursday.

Kelvin was here, in his Winner’s Bar, entertaining guests and clients for as long as any of  us can remember. He also manned his post at the Winner’s Bar, Turffontein, and at the Vaal forever. When we came racing, Kelvin was there to serve, chat and, in typical Kelvin fashion, to ask if he could assist with something.

The man had a heart bigger than his considerable frame and Mike de Kock said: “Kelvin was a part of South African racing’s fabric. A bit of racing history has died with him!”

Kelvin ran charity events and raised money for retired and ill trainers and jockeys. He was always first at the sick’s bedside, and informed everyone he knew in racing – of the latest developments in the ranks of racing’s people. He raised funds where needed, until there was enough to help, never asking for a cent for himself, and suffering in his last years because of his own generosity.

The list of people Kelvin helped, without compensation, is long and colourful, like the photos and memorabilia in his various bars. He was a favourite to one and all,. His love for racing and its participants, and his appreciation and love for his wife had absolutely no limits.

Kelvin leaves his recently married wife, Angie, three children and a grandchild.

To us, he leaves a spirit of sincerity, goodwill, kindness, true compassion – all the good attributes that many of us will leave this world without.

We will miss you dearly, Kel, your place in our hearts will be occupied by your large spirit, forever.

Rest in Peace, good friend!
