MATHEW de Kock doesn’t often come away from his country trips to the Vaal without a winner and he saddled two at the Vaal on Thursday to bring the seasonal tally to 96.
First up was Baharin (4-10 favourite, headline photo), who quickened well under Bernard Fayd’Herbe to score a popular success for Sheikh Hamdan. The son of Gimmethegreenlight put two easy lengths between himself and the runner-up and Mathew said: “He looks a smart horse we’d like to try over further.” Baharin was bred by the Wilgerbosdrift/Mauritzfontein partnership.
Callan Murray produced the Australian import Jailhouse Jazz with a strong run on the far side fence. She kept on well to win a 1450m Maiden Plate in open company, obviously more to come on the strength of this.
“Well done to Mr (Michael) Javett and Mrs (Mary) Slack for this one. Jailhouse Jazz’s dam is a full-sister to Alboran Sea, who won the Gr1 Cape Flying Champinship in the same partnership’s silks.
