IF you add just a “G” to her name, Alileo will be one of the greatest stallions of our time but of course she’s just a three-year-old filly starting her career.
Alileo is by Captain Al from Sidera, a mare by Galileo who won the 2009 Gr3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein in the era of fillies like Fisani and Laverna – she was quite special and her daughter is also headed for feature success.
Alileo (Callan Murray up) stepped from her Maiden to a MR89 Handicap to win another 1200m contest at Turffontein Saturday, this time against four- and five-time winners, and on that alone she looks like one of the stable’s better three-year-old fillies.
Mathew de Kock confirmed that Alileo is “talented” and said: “She beat quite a strong field over 1200m, which is too short for her. Her rating’s still ok, so we’ll work through the divisions with her.”
Alileo, a R550,000 purchase from the CTS Yearling Sale, races for the high-profile partnership of Bernard Kantor and Chris Van Niekerk, along with Mayfair Speculators, Diane Nagle and Mrs Paul Shanahan.
Earlier in the day, Murray partnered Mohammed Khaleel Ahmed’s two-year-old VAR filly Only To Win to a 3.75-length victory in a Maiden Plate over 1450, beating older horses.
“She’s a limited filly, but that she won so well against older fillies over this trip gives us hope for another win or two,” Mathew assessed.
