PUNTA Cana is an area of lavish, all-inclusive resorts on the Dominican Republic’s Coconut Coast, and perhaps the horse by the same name can pay for a holiday there.
An even-money favourite on his 1000m debut at Turffontein on Tuesday evening, Punta Cana (Randall Simons) raced away in easy style, putting almost four lengths between himself and runner-up Silver God.
“He looks like a good horse, he could be Graded material,” said Mike de Kock on Wednesday.
Mike and Form Bloodstock’s Jehan Malherbe bought this Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontin-bred colt for Sheik Hamdan at the 2016 National Yearling Sale, paying R1,4-million
He is certainly bred for great things, Punta Cana is not only by a champion sire in Trippi but is out of G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Rememberance –a daughter of Mauritzfontein’s late, great sire Fort Wood who raced for the late Bridget Oppenheimer.
This is the famous Lily family responsible for such high class G1 winners as Bold Thatch, Ravishing and Rememberance’s three parts brother Fort Defiance.
