HE wasn’t considered good enough to race in last year’s Summer Cup, but Grey Arrow proved that the selection panel made a grave error when controversially omitting him from the final field of Africa’s richest race, when he doddled Saturday’s R120 000 Listed Drum Star Stakes over 2000m at Turffontein on 9 April, 2005.
Grey Arrow (MJ Odendaal) won by 4,.50 lengths from the accomplished, 5-10 favourite Bilboa. This win vindicated owner Cecil Treger’s decision last year to cut his ties with South African horseracing, and is nothing less than an embarrassment to the Summer Cup selection panel.
We can only hope that the committee charged with selecting the field for this year’s Vodacom July will make the kind of sensible choices the Summer Cup committee wasn’t capable of.
