Heather’s Boy is unbeaten after three impressive starts, two of them over 1600m and the latest a commanding victory over Grade 1 performer Guy Gibson, whilst out at the weights.
The formbook showed that it was always going to be a two-horse race, but Heather’s Boy made light work of the task, and drew away to win by 1,50-lengths.
Jockey Craig Zackey said he wished there were more runners in the field, for a stronger challenge. “He’s getting better with every run, I think he will be best over 2000m. He is top class, he’s done everything right and I think he will enjoy the course at Kenilworth.”
Mike de Kock said that Heather’s Boy had missed 10 days of work due to a foot inury and that he was relieved that Heather’s Boy had come through this run as he was short of peak fitness. “This was a nice piece of Guineas work. There is a helluva good horse in Cape Town, Vaughan Marshall’s One Stripe, but we’ll go down and take our chances.”
Heather’s Boy is a Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein-bred by Rafeef out of Folk Dance and he is owned by Christine Laidlaw’s Khaya Stables.
