The stage is set for the R6 million Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup, Africa’s richest horse race, following the official Barrier Draw ceremony held at Katy’s Palace in Kramerville. Hosted by 4Racing in partnership with Betway, the event unveiled a star-studded lineup of 20 contenders, including past champions Royal Victory (2023) and Puerto Manzano (2022), promising a thrilling contest at Turffontein Racecourse.
The draw, overseen by Clyde Basel, began with remarks from 4Racing CEO Fundi Sithebe and Betway’s Jonathan Blumberg, highlighting their shared vision to elevate horse racing across Africa. Blumberg expressed Betway’s pride in supporting the prestigious event, now the continent’s richest Group race, and reaffirmed the importance of strategic preparation for trainers following the draw. Demonstrating their commitment to the “People’s Race,” Betway also honored the grooms of every participating horse with R20,000 each, celebrating their vital role in the sport.
Adding an international spotlight to this year’s event is three-time British Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy, who will ride Frances Ethel for trainer Brett and James Crawford from Gate 7. Murphy’s presence brings global recognition to the Summer Cup, with 4Racing CEO Fundi Sithebe describing it as a unique opportunity to showcase South African racing talent on a world stage. Other notable contenders include the current favorite See It Again (Gate 6), defending champion Royal Victory (Gate 15), and Durban July winner Winchester Mansion (Gate 13), all of whom will be looking to etch their names in racing history. They represent some of the top rated horses in South Africa along with Main Defender, who drew gate 3.
Oisin Murphy was riding at Kempton as the draw was happening, booting home a brilliant winner. He had one eye on Johannesburg, South Africa and was ecstatic about the draw calling it ‘brilliant’. It’s half the job done.
With barrier positions finalized, anticipation for Africa’s premier racing event is at a fever pitch.
