Apprentice Trent Mayhew rode a good race on Mary’s Greenlight to win the MR70 handicap for apprentices and young jockeys staged over 1600m at the Vaal on Thursday. They held on from fast-finishing stable companion Spring In Heaven, ridden by apprentice Plaatjies.
The straight mile at the Vaal is always a tricky contest to win and Mike was complimentary of Mayhew’s ride, saying: “Trent rode a mature race and I am happy for him. He rides work for us some mornings, works hard. His father is guiding him well (referring to Craig Mayhew, Trent’s trainer dad)”
Mary’s Greenlight is a three-year-old by Gimmethegreenlight out of Grand Mary, by Kyllachy, raised at Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift Stud and races in her silks.
