We’d love to jump to conclusions!

There are a few relevant puns to think of, in reference to Beamonesque’s seven-length win in a 1200m Maiden on the inside track at Turffontein on Saturday. “He jumped well and put daylight between himself and his rivals” is one, and “We’re hoping he reaches great heights” could be another. ‘

Beamonesque was named after Robert ‘Bob’ Beamon, an American former track and field star, best known for his world record in the Long Jump at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. He jumped 8.90m and broke the existing record by a staggering 55cm – still the Olympic record!

But, as always, Mike de Kock won’t want to jump the gun. It will be step by step to better things for this smart-looking son of Rafeef and Mohallela, a lightly raced mare who placed twice for the stable in 2018 before she was retired to stud under Sheik Hamdan”s Shadwell banner.

He said: “Beamonesque has a lot of pace, so much so that I won’t mind putting him in a 1000m race. I think we’ll keep him to sprinting for now. It’s too soon to make a call on him, we’ll need to see more, but he does give us the vibes of a horse that has a future. He reminds me a bit of (our international G1 winning sprinter) Shea Shea.”

Jockey Gavin Lerena said that Beamonesque gave him a nice feel: “He jumped well and switched off, did it like a gentleman. He’s a nice horse and this was a lovely win.”

Beamonesque races for Warne Rippon and Arun Chadha’s ASSM Syndicate, with Mathew de Kock, Corey Smith, Clint and James Prebble from Australia also involved, and Mike owning a share himself.

Said Corey, the communications manager for Mathew and training partner Robbie Griffiths at Cranbourne: “We watched the race live and we were ecstatic. Clint is an lifelong racing supporter and a big fan of Mike and his crew. James works in racing, also, for Mathew Cumani who has another South African Jason May (formerly from Drakenstein) working for him. So we all shared a smile!”

Woman Of Power wins. (JC Photos).

Woman Of Power opened the day with her Maiden win for Jessica and Steven Jell of Mauritzfontein.  She was drawn wide again, like two weeks ago when she ran out of steam near the line. but Jockey JP van der Merwe waited a bit longer before he hit the accelerator this time and he said: “She was fitter today and she won well, there was more in the tank.”

Mike agreed and said: “Woman of Power is progressive. Being by Vercingetorix out of a Fort Wood mare, I think she’ll go on from here and enjoy a bit more ground. She’s a decent filly.”
