A lot has been said and written this week about Dubai World Cup night. South Africa has representation for the 15th consecutive year via two Mike de Kock runners in Al Sahem (Dubai Gold Cup, left on photo) and Janoobi (Dubai Turf) and while they’re both proper outsiders by bookmakers’ accounts worldwide, both have the ability to earn a stake tonight.
“They’re both in a good space, sound and happy,” said Mike on Friday afternoon.
For most trainers that is all you need to go into battle with some confidence. Janoobi has the pace and the draw to be in good contention at the business end; Al Sahem’s last run signalled a return to his best and if he enjoys 3200m he could be the joker in the pack.
We’ll be rooting!

I am a big supporter of Mike and his team in Dubai but I think it’s time for Mike to forget about Dubai and find a new challenge maybe try conquer the UK and Ireland. I have watched every year the Dubai Carnival but this year was the worst I have seen, Mike’s runners looked like Listed runners instead of Group winners. If Mike is going to stay and race in Dubai he needs to invest in runners from Argentina, Australia, Ireland and the very best from South Africa so we can compete on all levels (grass and dirt) racing.
