THE Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile Day does not only see R1 million being dispersed among 16 charities but there is also a residue for the owners who might have a struggling maiden or two.

On Saturday at Turffontein two Maiden Plates, one over 1160m and the other over 1600m, will carry huge prize money of R250,000 each. They have both been sponsored by her Serene Royal Highness Princess Charlene Of Monaco who even in horseracing, wants to see something happen for the little guy in racing.

Princess Charlene Of Monaco.

Not surprisingly, there were 113 nominations for the 1160m race and 111 for the 1600m event. Only 16 runners get into each race so to make it absolutely fair, Princess Charlene’s father, Mike Wittstock, randomly drew the 16 lucky runners. There are four reserve runners in each event.

There is a double charity bonus as the Racing Association donates all the nominations fees for those two races to the Horse Care Unit which means they will receive a cash injection of R112,000.

The connections of the two winning horses will each receive R156,250, R50,000 goes to the second-placed runner, R25,000 for third place, R12,500 for fourth and R6,250 for fifth.
