OWNER Winston Chow’s four-year-old mare The Centenary (red silks) is proving to be quite versatile. She’s an out-and-out stayer having won well over 2400m and 2600m, but Mike de Kock had found the right 1800m race for her at Turffontein on Thursday and she claimed the opportunity to win well.
The Centenary raced under top weight in this MR82 Handicap for Fillies and Mares and, held up early, she made good headway in the last 300m to win convincingly under Randall Simons.
Mike congratulated the Hong Kong-based owner and said: “The fields at this time of year are a little weaker so this race suited The Centenary.”
The NZ import by Mastercraftsman is coming into her own as a four-year-old, has all the staying ability she needs with Montjeu in the damline is likely to pick up more marathon events this season.
