ILHA Bela (photo), who will be bidding to give Mike de Kock his 10th Sansui Summer Cup win, is Betting World’s favourite at 11-2 for the big race, ahead of Yorker, one of four runners from the stable of Geoff Woodruff.
The best value in the ante-post betting might be the 14-1 about Tiger’s Retreat, winner of the Victory Moon Stakes at Turffontein recently. The Sean Tarry-trained gelding beat Master Sabina, an 8-1 chance for the Summer Cup, by a head with Ilha Bela third. He does meet Master Sabina on 0.5kg worse terms and Ilha Bela is 1.5kg better off for a 1.25-length beating, but he rallied gamely when headed and should stay the 2000m, which he tries for the first time.
He has come in slightly from his opening call of 16-1, while Royal Bencher is now quoted at 25-1, having opened at 33s.
Graham Beck Stakes winner Whistle Stop, who is also trained by De Kock, has opened favourite at 22-10 for the Investec Dingaans, one of the six supporting features on Cup Day, while Espumanti is quoted at 15-10 for the Ipi Tombe Challenge, with Do You Remember at 2-1.
