THE first three past the post in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein two weeks back will line up again as the chief protagonists for the R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile to be run over 1600m on the Turffontein standside track on Saturday 2 November.
Wylie Hall beat home Whiteline Fever by a neck in that event with Cherry On The Top a further 0.50 lengths back in third. Whiteline Fever will have a 0.5kg weight advantage with the SA Derby winner and a 2.5kg turnaround with the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara winner when they line up for this Grade 2 event.
On paper that could make Sean Tarry’s charge the horse to beat but the question is how much the other horses have improved since then. Wylie Hall was having his first start since finishing unplaced in the Vodacom Durban while Cherry On The Top was coming back from a break of more than four months.
However, they are not the only three contenders. Geoff Woodruff saddles Gauteng Guineas winner and SA Classic runner-up Tellina, Killua Castle and Yorker. As Robbie Fradd selected to ride Tellina the son of Silvano is probably the stable elect but once again, he has drawn poorly and will jump from barrier No 14.
Killua Castle, with Richard Fourie up, drew at pole position while Yorker, the mount of Anton Marcus, will jump from barrier No 4.
There is a 12-race card at the Day/Night meeting and also down to run on the day are the Grade 3 Graham Beck Stakes and Starling Stakes, both over 1400m, the Listed Golden Loom Handicap and the R3-million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup (Non-Black Type) over 1400m.
The Graham Beck Stakes is one of the most interesting races on the card as some of the best three-year-olds in the country will square up, including Willow Magic, Heart Of A Lion, Bouclette Top, Whistle Stop and impressive maiden winner Shadow Ofhis Smile, who jumps from draw No 1.
The Ready To Run Cup, as is usually the case, looks wide open although the Woodruff-trained filly, Arceti Pink, might be able to outclass the boys.
The Starling Stakes is also highly competitive with the field headed up by Grade 1 Golden Slipper winner For The Lads. Unfortunately for the connections, she will have to jump from the widest of draws.
The same is true for unbeaten Copiapo, who has the form to win but will jump from barrier No 15.
