August 12, 2013THE Apache has arrived in Chicago for the 31st running of the Gr1 Arlington Million (2000m), due for Saturday, 17 August, at the city’s Arlington Park Racecourse.
The seven-time winning South African-bred six-year-old is reported to be in good shape for the race and Mike de Kock reported on Monday: “The Apache travelled well and he’s in the care of Declan Cronin along with his regular work rider Phil Shea. Christophe Soumillon will fly in later this week and has been booked for the ride.”
Mike finished second in the 2008 renewal of the $US1-million race with Archipenko.

First and foremost, I think Mike De Kock is absolutely a genius trainer. So many times over the years I’ve seen him take Coolmore castoff horses and make winners out of them. Most recently accomplished with David Livingston at Haydock in the G3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes. I think The Apache has a great shot at winning the G1 Arlington Million. Second start back from the Dubai layoff, and he ran a pretty creditable race in the Sky Bet York Stakes. Doesn’t hurt that he’ll have Christophe Soumillon riding either. The Apache beat some pretty serious horses to win the G2 Al Rashidiya at Meydan, and finished behind only Sajjhaa in both the G1 Jebel-Hatta & G1 Dubai Duty Free. His Dubai form alone gives him serious claims on the Million. I personally think Grandeur may have the best piece of current form coming into the race. Rated 115 and carrying a G2 penalty for his wins in America, Grandeur was conceding 5lbs. to the 125 rated Mukhadram in the York Stakes and was beaten only 3/4 lengths by him. The same Mukhadram that’s been right up Al Kazeem’s backside in the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes & G1 Coral-Eclipse. Should be a great race on Saturday!!
