TIGER Ridge, who moved up seven positions into the Top 10 on the South African stallions list in 2012/13, produced two winners at Turffontein on Saturday to get his 2013/14 campaign off to a good start for Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift Stud.
Santa Carolina, bright future.
Three-year-old filly Santa Carolina, a well-made grey like her famous dam, Ilha Da Vitoria, won a cracking race on debut, storming away to win a Maiden Plate over 1400m. Capricorn Ridge also won well, putting 1.75-lengths between himself and the runner-up in a Novice Plate over 1400m. Both were ridden by stable jockey Anthony Delpech.
Assistant trainer Mathew de Kock was suitably impressed by both winners and spoke in high regard of the well-bred debutante, in particular, saying: “Santa Carolina quickened from off the pace to beat some well-performed Maidens. She’s a bit bigger than her mother but has the same attributes. She’s professional, she does everything you ask other and we believe she has a bright future.”
Capricorn Ridge, controlled it.
Santa Carolina races in Slack’s red-and-black silks, while Capricorn Ridge sported the colours of the Tiger Ridge Syndicate.
Capricorn Ridge took command early and Mathew said: “He did it on his own and had no trouble. He was impressive and is one to watch.”
Delpech rode another winner for the stable at Clairwood on Sunday, bringing Fort Wood colt Star Point home to an easy win for the partnership of Mike de Kock, Ferdi Ladeira and Chris Gerber.
The stable is off to a superb start in the new season too, with seven winners on the board in the first 10 days of the term.
