PERANA has been priced up favourite for the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein next Saturday, 27 November.
Bookmakers had Perana, the only three-year-old in the race, at 7-2 when the betting opened but that was claimed almost immediately and the Australian-bred colt shortened to 28-10. A second claim, also of R50,000, came just six minutes later and as a result Perana is now quoted at 2-1.
The Rock Of Gibraltar colt has raced just four times for two wins but he staked his claim at Turffontein recently when winning the Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m at Turffontein, beating Mother Russia by 0.50 lengths. The five-year-old mare is 1kg better off and that, on paper at least, will bring them closer together.
Mother Russia, Pierre Jourdan and Charity Mile winner Alderry were all opened at 5-1 but have drifted to 6-1 following the weight of money for Perana.

There was also a R50,000 claim on the 20-1 offered about Zirconeum (headline photo) and she has shortened to 12-1 where she now sits alongside Bulsara.
Mike de Kock saddles six horses in this race and it is interesting to note that with Flirtation at 16-1, he trains five of the top nine horses in the betting. The only outsider of his sextet is 2008 winner Rudra, who is currently at 50-1.
Betting for the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup (Grade 1) is:
2-1 PERANA (FROM 28-10)
6-1 PIERRE JOURDAN, MOTHER RUSSIA, ALDERRY
12-1 BULSARA, ZIRCONEUM (FROM 20-1)
