Tyrconnell had factors in his favour in Race 3 over 1400m at Scottsville on Sunday – a good draw, course and distance suitability and a handy weight. He made them count with a follow-up win under Kabelo Matsunyane.
“I’m familiar with Tyrconnell, I won his Maiden on him and remembered him well,” said Matsunyane, who would have been a bit worried early when Tyrconnell came off the bit and had to be niggled along for position.
“I just left him alone,” said Matsunyane, and that did the trick, because Tyrconnell picked it up nicely in the straight and reeled in the leaders. “I knew at the 300m-mark we had it won, this was impressive,” concluded the jockey.
Tyrconnell is a five-year-old by The United States out of Carraig Aonair. He was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein and competes in the Hollywood Racing silks. Hollywood’s Anthony Delpech was on hand to lead the gelding into the winner’s box.
