Kingman’s daughter Good Queen Bess capped a wonderful weekend for Mary Slack when she got back to winning ways at Scottsville on Saturday. Her victory came just 48 jours after Mary’s Claymore had beaten Queen Elizabeth’s Reach For The Moon in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.
“It’s just unbelievable,” said Mary on Sunday evening.
Mike de Kock was scratching his head about Good Queen Bess, who has a stout pedigree but didn’t live up to expectations when tried over 1500m and 1800m. But brought back to a sprint on Saturday she travelled well throughout for Richard Fourie, moved up smartly at the 400m mark and won a bit easier than the 0.40-length margin suggests.
This wasn’t the strongest field ever assembled, but with her confidence back we can expect to see more of this lovely chestnut filly.
