AVONTUUR Stud’s graduate Cold As Ice (Bernard Fayd’Herbe), won her secondstart in the UK on Monday, a Conditions Stakes over 1400m at Chelmsford, by 0.75 lengths.
The outstanding daughter of Western Winter was a leading light in the Cape 3yo ranks last season, winning 5 of 7 starts, including two Gr2’s.
She was having her second start for trainer William Haggas and regular pilot Fayd’herbe said that she was a lot fitter and felt like the ‘Ferrari’ he had ridden back home in Cape Town.

Cold As Ice was purchased on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 for R875 000 and races in a partnership of Kathy Finch and Belinda Kieswetter.
The star filly was bred by Avontuur and is by Western Winter out of the lightning fast seven time winning National Assembly mare, Viva (National Assembly x Hot Grass)
Avontuur’s General Manager Pippa Mickleburgh was over the moon: “The major excitement as we approach next month’s CPYS Book 1 is that Cold As Ice has a close relative on offer in the strong Avontuur draft.”
Seraphic (#25) will come up early on day one and is a daughter of the top farm’s sensational new stallion Oratorio, who has produced 7 international Gr1 winners to date and is high on the European leading sire lists. He looks to be a classic producing sire if we have ever seen one.
Interested buyers are welcome to make an appointment with Pippa at Avontuur Estate for a private yearling viewing from 5 January to 15 January, or from the 19th at Avontuur’s Stud Lounge at the CTICC.
