FORMER Highveld trainer Lance Wiid died on Wednesday night. He was 47.
Wiid, a son of the late Derreck Wiid who was part of the team that established Phumelela, trained from a private farm in Henley-On-Klip and gave up his trainer’s license last year after 16 years in the game. His final winner came on 2 February, Tuscon Dream.

Lance’s finest accomplishment during his training career was his handling of King’s Gambit, winner of the SA Classic and SA Derby in 2008, and he also won the Grade 3 Jubilee Handicap and Listed Drum Star Handicap with Captain Corageous.
He is survived by his widow, Kerry-Ann, son Declan and mother Anne.
