GRADE 1-placed filies One Fine Day and Pine Princess, as well as the unbeaten Dynasty filly Maria Theresa, from Mike de Kock’s stable, are among the 25 entries for the R400,000 Choice Carriers Championship over 1400m at Kenilworth on Saturday 8 November. All, however, have drawn wide.

Mike won the race with Philippa Johnson 11 years ago and has entered Maria Theresa as well as the Grade 1-placed pair One Fine Day and Pine Princess.

Promising Maria Theresa is a Choice Carriers hopeful.

Highest rated of the Western Cape-trained horses is Joey Ramsden’s Grey Light (101) who was fifth in the Golden Slipper and later won a Greyville novice plate by 7,50 lengths. Double Whammy, rated 100, has won three of her four starts including the Diana Stakes and will represent Glen Kotzen who won this with Princess Victoria three years ago.

The Choice Carriers (formerly Odessa) is a hugely influential stepping stone to the Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas with three of the last four winners of the classic having won the Choice Carriers en-route. It is also a good race for favourites who have been successful in six of the last seven runnings.

There is a supplementary entry stage on Wednesday 29 October and the declaration stage is the following day. There are no penalties – all fillies carry 58kg.

The sponsors are offering a horse travel voucher worth R10 000 as the prize in a draw but only those on course on the day can win it.
