DR Andreas Jacobs has focused in recent years on the quality of the broodmares at his Maine Chance Farms by buying the best-bred fillies and mares available at various European Sales. He’s also supported the local industry, purchasing fillies for racing and stud, including Maria Theresa, who followed her 1200m debut win at Scottsville with a 1400m success on the Polytrack at Greyville on Sunday.
“I (look) at the future of the mare or the financial balance between mare value and nomination price. In general, I love mating discussions. They put the truth on the table about the value of your mares, your stallions, and former matings,” Jacobs told Sporting Post in a 2011 interview.
Maria Theresa has a future on the racetrack and at stud.
Maria Theresa won from the widest of draws under Anthony Delpech and is expected to make more progress in summer. She’s a daughter of Dynasty from A Star For Maria by Noverre (USA) and hails from the immediate family of Never Retreat, the 2011 Horse Of The Year in Canada.
Owned in partnership with Dames Magnier and Shanahan of Coolmore Stud fame, Maria Theresa was a R1,2-million buy at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in 2013.
The same partnership races Mike de Kock-trained Gr1-placed filly Pine Princess, while Jacobs and his wife Natalie also have the likes of promising LA Cenerentola and Adhira in Mike’s care.
