JUST one horse was added at second entry stage for the R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (Grade 2) over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday 3 November, Lucky Houdalakis-trained Kings Entourage.
The King Of Kings five-year-old ran arguably his best race to date in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m recently when he finished a 1.50-length second to top-notch Silver Flyer.
Charity Mile Day is one of the most popular events on Phumelela’s racing calendar because it amalgamates great horses, famous people and corporates, who all join forces to support charity. Each of the runners in the Charity Mile is linked to a charity, a celebrity and a corporate sponsor and their finishing positions determine how much money each of the charities gets, with the charity tied to the winner taking home a whopping R100,000. The celebrities who will be on-course at the meeting will include Princess Charlene of Monaco.
Four other feature races will be run on Charity Mile Day, including the R200,000 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m, one of the most important preparatory races for the Dingaans on Sansui Summer Cup Day a month later.
The Hangman, who is trained by Sean Tarry at Randjesfontein, is the top-rated three-year-old on the Highveld at the moment and he is among the entries for the Graham Beck Stakes along with War Horse, winner of last season’s Golden Horseshoe.
The top filly in the list of nominations is Mike de Kock-trained Dubai Dizzy, a highly regarded winner of two of her three starts to date. The champion trainer has also entered talented Reign As Kings, Cannon, Emerald Approach and recent debut winners Electric Jet, Mercurial Brave and Presidio.
De Kock, who has already won three of Phumelela’s graded races this season – the Grade 2 Emerald Cup with Meadow Magic, the Grade 3 Joburg Spring Challenge with Link Man and the Grade 3 Joburg Spring Fillies & Mares Challenge with Festival Of Fire – also has a strong entry for the R200,000 HSH Princess Charlene Of Monaco Starling Stakes (Grade 3) over 1400m.
Dubai Dizzy (yellow, blue silks), entered for Graham Beck Stakes.
Horses listed under his name are feature-placed Al Kindi, Aneefa, Festival Of Fire, who is now a three-time winner from only four starts, Honorine, who took on the males in the Golden Horseshoe and finished third behind War Horse, Golden Slipper winner Rumya and Tayba.
Another top-class filly on the list is King’s Temptress, winner of the SA Fillies Nursery on debut last season.
The richest race on the card is the R2.5-million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m, a race that is restricted to graduates of Summerhill Stud’s Ready To Run Sale.
De Kock won the race for the first time in the five years of its existence when Red Barrel took top honours last year. He has entered three runners, Emaliyami, Lonsome Dove and Nandi.
Trainer Charles Laird, who won the race with Hollywoodboulevard in 2010, has the highest-rated entry in Indaba My Children, as well as feature-placed Dylan’s Promise.
