As a young manI really enjoyed the excitement of the Durban July with the calibre of horses like Sea Cottage, and Colorado King, but over the years the crowds that once were have dwindled and the calibre of racehorse has fallen.
The last great racehorse that South Africa had was Horse Chestnut.
I now live in Sydney and Australia has a great races like the Goldden Slipper and the Melbourne Cup where the atmosphere is like what the Juky once was. Australia also has super horses like Black Caviar that create great excitement.
It’s a pity the atmosphere of old cannot be recaptured in South Africa, but then there are no Sea Cottage’s or Black Caviar’s are there?
