AS expected, Muzi Yeni had an easy ride on Mary Slack’s filly Fortuny (15-20), a popular winner of Race 1 over 1400m at Greyville on Tuesday evening.
Fortuny accellerated smartly over the last 200m, straightened under Yeni’s left-armed whip after shifting out, and won going away, putting 3.25-lengths between herself and the runner-up.
“When I squeezed Fortuny she quickened smartly. She just needed her last run and the stable had her spot-on tonight,” Yeni said.
Kotzen added: “Fortuny is still a bit weak and immature, she will strengthen up and go over a bit further. Well done to Mrs. Slack, it’s nice to have a winner for her again.”
Fortuny, raised at Wilgerbosdrift Stud, is by Tiger Ridge from Velvet Green, who won the 2001 Garden Province Stakes in the Slack silks and passed on her chestnut coat and prominent white feet to this promising three-year-old. Velvet Green has also produced the international stakes performer Wonder Lawn.
