THE dispersal sale of horses owned in various partnerships by Mike de Kock and Dean Maroun and conducted by Basel Bloodstock grossed R11,8 million at Randjesfontein last Wednesday, 19 January, writes CHARL PRETORIUS.
The highest price at the sale was paid for Victory Moon, who was bought by Dean Maroun for R5 million. Victory Moon, who has retired to stud at Maine Chance Farms, was a tough and versatile racehorse who won on turf and sand, earning R17,5 million in his racing career. He finished third to Pleasantly Perfect in last year’s US$6 million Dubai World Cup.
Maroun also bought back, among others, the MAD Syndicate’s well-performed South African runner, Domino Man (R300 000), Dubai based Otter Trail (R800 000) and Ned Kelly (R1 million).
De Kock bought seven horses, including promising filly Irridescence (R600 000).
The dispersal sale resulted from a dispute between De Kock and Maroun, who had great success in South Africa and Dubai racing in partnerships under the banner of various syndicates. Both parties expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the sale.
Maroun’s horses will in future be trained by De Kock’s former assistant, Frikkie Greyling, who is in the process of setting up base at Randjesfontein.
