A strike for Wicklow Stud

SILVANO filly Anatalya picked up her Maiden win at her fourth attempt when coasting clear in a Maiden Plate for Fillies and Mares over 1800m at Clairwood, Tuesday.

Anatalya won by three lengths for apprentice Craig Zackey and Rennie Price’s Wicklow Stud.

She’s impeccably bred from a mare by Elusive Quality and Rennie tells mikedekockracing.com:  “I bought her dam, Ankara, in foal to Bertollini at the Tattersalls Sale, but she aborted the foetus and we sent her to Silvano next.

“Anatalya was drafted to the National Yearling Sale, but she didn’t receive a single bid, so I bought my partners out for the reserve price and sent her to Mike de Kock’s stable. She’s obviously a beautiful broodmare prospect for Wicklow Stud – she’s from the female line of Kingmambo – but we’re hoping she can win a few on the track as well.”

Assistant trainer John Buckler said Anatalya is a filly with some scope who will stay over more ground and agreed with Price, who asserts that she will improve with maturity.

Wicklow Stud, based in the Sunday’s River Valley and going strong for 17 years, enjoyed another successful National Yearling Sale, selling all 11 lots offered at an average R193,000, including a Jet Master colt, bought by Tawny Syndicate for R600,000.

Best Western outgunned his rivals.

At the Turffontein night meeting on Tuesday, first-timer Best Western (Miesque’s Approval, Gavin Lerena) won comfortably on his debut for owner Andre Macdonald, while filly  Santa Clarita scored for the Tiger Ridge Syndicate,  giving in-form Marco van Rensburg another winner.
