Four wins on lazy Sunday

ALYAASAAT crowned a successful day for the stable at Turffontein Sunday, winning a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m (Race 7) in emphatic fashion. Queen Supreme, Apache Too and Barahin (report elsewhere) had won earlier in the day.

There really wasn’t much to it. Sheikh Hamdan’s Alyaasaat (Dawn Approach, Anton Marcus) looked all class as he settled a few lengths off, travelled with a “double handful” going through the 400m and then just skipped away to win unchallenged from Zouaves and Full Mast.

Mike de Kock commented: “He’s at very best a miler, but 1400m is his game and he has enough pace to revert back to 1200m, we won’t have a problem with that.

“This was an excellent run in one of the strongest Pinnacle Plates I’ve seen in a few years. Alyaasaat is an improving horse and we’ll find a feature race for him somewhere along the line.”

Another three-year-old, Apache Too, won his MR86 Handicap over 1600m for jockey Diego de Gouveia, who rode him hard to get there and felt he needed more ground. Mike agreed, saying: “Wait until he goes over 2000m.  He’ll love the extra.

“Apache Too is a nice, sound and game horse. I’ve had two runners by The Apache (Mogok), Arlington’s Revenge and this one and both have impressed me with their honesty and quality. They’re like their sire, who was an international Group 1 winner. I’m not sure what kind of support he’s had at stud so far, but he’s a stallion that deserves his share of good mares.”

Queen Supreme (Marcus) got the ball rolling with a 1400m debut win, impressive albeit against weak opposition.

“Queen Supreme could only win and she did so very well. She’s a filly that shows us good work and she could have a future. She’s one to keep an eye on.”

Mike bought Queen Supreme in Ireland for Markus Jooste and bought her back again on Jooste’s dispersal. Queen Supreme was syndicated for Mike, Jessica Slack, Larry Nestadt, JJ van der Linden and Noeline Malherbe. She’s by Exceed and Excel from a mare by Gone West.
