“A massive July runner”

“BARAHIN will be a massive Durban July runner at the weights,” said Mike de Kock, who was thrilled after the three-year-old colt had defeated older horses in the Gr3 Jubilee Handicap over 1800m at Turffontein, Sunday.

Barahin came from last under Anton Marcus, made up 10 lengths in the last 400m and won going away, securing his spot in the major contest on 6 July at Greyville.

Mike said after the race: “I don’t care whether the older horses looked a bit moderate. Barahin gave them weight and a beating. It was a massive win for a three-year-old and the Jubilee, to my mind, is a better pointer to the July than the Greyville 1900.”

Mike confirmed Marcus’ opinion that Barahin was so immature and green he felt “unconscious” and said: “He’s just a young horse, but he’s a proper Gr1 horse, for sure.  He has been inferior to Hawwaam on form, but there’s less in it than the book shows. Barahin has had niggles and he was underdone every time’s he’s raced against Hawwaam.

“Nothing has gone right for Barahin so far, we’ve never managed to get him to his peak but if goes into the July with an uninterrupted preparation he’ll make his presence felt, we are excited.”

Barahin has won four races from seven runs for Sheikh Hamdan Of Dubai and he’s earned over R1,1-million. He’s a Wilgerbosdrift/Mauritzfontein bred by Gimmethegreenlight from Mocha Special, by Silvano.

Bookmakers have trimmed Baharin’s Durban July odds from 8-1 to 11-2 and some to 5-1.
