Full of merit

ALYAASAAT (AUS) had all the factors in his favour in an Assesment Plate over 1600m at Turffontein on Monday and he duly won for jockey Randall Simons – meritorious all the same as he needed the run after a rest.

Mathew de Kock commented: “Alyaasaat was carrying some condition, he needed the run and he showed his class winning.”

There was a word out that Geoff Woodruff fancied his runner Iditarot Trial – he gave some cheek and his trainers’ view of him underlines the quality of Alyaasaat’s win.

“We’ll look at the Graham Beck next with a view to the Dingaans,” Mat said of Alyaasaat, as son of Dawn Approach owned by Sheikh Hamdan.

Earlier, Pearl Of Bahrain posted an impressive second career win in a MR67 over 2000m. Simons put the pedal down early, she got away and then held on well to win.

“She won well under top weight and from a wide draw, she’ll keep on knocking,” said Mat.
