Star mare Winx’s 21st

WINX has made it 21 straight wins after obliterating the field to win the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday

The champion mare never looked challenged as she sat comfortably near the front runners around the Flemington turn before putting the foot down and surging out to a lead of a few lengths in the blink of an eye.

Leading by up to eight lengths with 100m still to run, it will be remembered as one of the six-year-old’s greatest performances.

The bay took the race without a challenge from the field. Ventura Storm finished second ahead of Humidor in third.

Jockey Hugh Bowman never looked threatened as he steered the his champion horse to a $300,000 pay day for the Waller stable and Winx’s connections.

“It’s a dream to be a part of this,” Bowman said. “She’s a great horse and it’s a privilege for me and my family to be part of this.”

Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney described Winx’s six and a half legths win as “devastating”.

“This is the best she has raced by far,” he said. “I mean it was devastating. This was just so, so good.”

Trainer Chris Waller joked after the win, that Winx is still waiting for a challenge today.

“Was there a test?” he asked. “She’s a brilliant horse. Whatever you ask her to do she does. She makes us all look good. There’s no training manual for a horse like Winx.”

Winx’s form is ominous less than a month out from her run at a third consecutive Cox Plate win.

The mare’s effortless win left many commentators stunned.
