The Fear Of Missing Out

THERE was some good coverage in the racing media this week about Gr1 Irish Oaks winner Covert Love, who gave English trainer Hugo Palmer an early wedding present and his first Classic triumph at the Curragh last Saturday.

Interestingly, and not as widely reported, is that Mike de Kock’s patron Jessica Slack of Mauritzfontein Stud is a member of the “FOMO” Syndicate who owns Covert Love,a daughter of Azamour.

Covert Love: Her best days yet to come.

“I was offered a share by Mark McStay and I bought into Covert Love a while ago,” Jessica tells. “I own 28% along with a bunch of other young people. This filly has been a surprise package. I am still shell-shocked  by her amazing performance in the Oaks, even though she’d won her last few starts so well.

“The best thing is that it was a perfect wedding gift for Hugo Palmer just a week before his wedding.”

“FOMO” means “Fear Of Missing Out” and Jessica quips: “I had FOMO but was thrilled to be able to watch the race live on Tellytrack. I got the shakes for about 3 hours!”

She’s travelling somewhere in Europe at present and perhaps Jessica wants to make sure she sees her filly in the flesh next time soon as Hugo Palmer commented:  “There’s still time to put Covert Love in the St Leger. We might wait and see what the weather does in August and maybe think about the Yorkshire Oaks.

“We paid E40,000 (R538 000) to come here as a supplementary entry. At that point that was every penny she had won in prize money. I’m delighted the syndicate allowed us to do it. She’s a lightly-raced, young filly. I genuinely believe her biggest days, if they get any bigger than this, could well be ahead of her.”

  1. Well done Ms Slack, may she win more for you!

  2. Well done Jessica….
